this is my sweet space.

when i was young, i lived there for 10years.

there are many memories of my young life.

in the past, we cound see "Mt. 아차".

However now we can not see it.

because high building was built on the end of road.

In Korea, Mcdonald greets the 21st anniversary.
Ronald is friendly for many korean people, even that grandpa.

It means that Globalization is familiar with us.

Foreigners in video are talking about North Korea's Human Rights.
They appeal to people in Insa dong(인사동).
How are they interested in NorthKorea's human rights?
Why are they interested in other country's problem?
In globalization, people's interest is spreading around the world.

Munrae dong (문래동)

i went to iron stores in Mun-rae dong. (Mun rae station is line no.2, green line)

there are many laboratories.

laboratiories are almost workroom of art.

workrooms of art are co-exist with iron stores.

it is a little awkward.

however it is very curious.

many art works harmonize with buildings, iron stores.

Do not be surprised.

Korean women hold hands easily with other woman.

But all they are not lesbian. (Of course some people are really lesbian.)

wings of crosswalk

2009.07.15.Wed.
I imagined a new crosswalk.
Every normal crosswalks are straight line. However, when many people almost reach to sidewalk they change the direction to the outside of crosswalk.(Maybe..they want to go fast to the desired direction.)
This situation can be very dangerous.
Because they depart from safe zone(a crosswalk).
So I think that if we make wings on both sides of the crosswalk, it helps people cross the street safely. --------Korean 나는 새로운 횡단보도를 상상했다. 거의 모든 횡단보도는 직선으로 되어 있다. 하지만 사람들은 인도에 다다를 때쯤 횡단보도 바깥쪽으로 방향을 꺾는다. (아무래도 자기가 원하는 방향으로 더 빨리 가기 위해서라 생각한다.) 이같은 현상은 매우 위험할 수 있다. 왜냐하면 그것은 안전선(횡단보도) 밖으로 벗어나는 것이기 때문이다. 그래서 나는 만약 횡단보도 양끝에 날개를 달아 놓으면 더 안전한 횡단보도가 될 수 있지 않을까 생각했다.

In Sogang Univ. Mary Hall, my team expressed feeling of seoul.
I expressed 'taking a nap in Seoul'. It means that I want to take a nap, because we don't have time to rest.
Two people expressed usual life in subway. A scene in the subway is reflecting Seoul.

나는 '서울에서의 쉼'을 표현하였는데 그 이유는 서울에서 우리는 쉴 수 있는 여유가 없기 때문에 그것을 원한다는 의미로 표현한 것이다.
나머지 두 사람은 지하철에서의 일상을 표현하고 있다.

The War Memorial of Korea (전쟁기념관)

I went to The War Memorial of Korea(전쟁기념관) with my team and Prof.Amy
It is near the U.S. military base.
When i realized that, i thought 6.25 war is still in progress.
The top rises highly. It describes a bronze sword, so it symbolizes brave ancestor.
And sad-looking faces are carved on the sword.
The sword is cut in two, it means that this history should not be repeated again.

오늘 전쟁기념관에 다녀왔습니다.
그곳은 미군 기지근처에 위치해 있습니다.
이러한 사실은 나로하여금 우리의 아픈 역사(6.25전쟁)가 아직 끝나지 않은 현재 진행형의 역사라는 느낌을 받게 했습니다.
탑은 하늘 높이 솟아있었고 그것은 청동검의 모양이었습니다.
그 검은 용맹무쌍한 선조들을 상징한다고 생각합니다.
그리고 그 검에는 슬픈 영혼들의 얼굴이 새겨져있었습니다.

FAKE PLASTIC TREES

Team name is G5B1. 2009.07.10.Fri we went to Seoul Tower. we made a music video. background music is "fake plastic trees". it is Radiohead's music. we wanted to express meaning of lyrics. "fake plastic trees" music expresses the pretense in this society, world. a boy and a girl are pretending to play a guitar in the music video. the performance represents the lyrics. we thought that fake plastic trees is similar to Seoul. Seoul is faced with rapid change, so Seoul is losing itself. (we learned frome foreigners' interview. they said Seoul is the city mixed various characters, but Seoul doesn't have its character.) we want to find the core of Seoul. we are searching it. ------------Korean 우리 팀 이름은 G5B1입니다. 2009년 7월 10일 금요일 우리는 서울타워에 갔습니다. 그곳에서 라디오헤드의 fake plastic trees의 뮤직비디오를 찍었습니다. 그 노래의 가사는 세상의 가식, 허위, 거짓된 모습을 표현하고 있습니다. M/V 속 소년과 소녀는 기타를 치는 시늉을 하고 있습니다. 이는 가사의 의미를 퍼포먼스로 표현한 것입니다. 그 노래가사는 마치 서울의 모습과도 비슷했습니다. 서울은 빠른 변화의 물결에 직면해 있습니다. 그래서 서울은 그 본연의 모습을 잃어가고 있습니다. The village is for French.

We wanted to see French life style, however we could not find differences with other village.

We could not see many foreigners.

Dual side of Seoul

We started our schedule with our group meeting.
First, our group members took roles to do our work easily. We talked about the things and symbols of Seoul like public transportation, the bridge of Han River, university campus, famous street in Seoul, etc. We had to use "Seoul" as a subject of our work so we just decided to go to City Hall to get inspiration. Over 2:30pm, we arrived at Seoul Plaza in front of City Hall. At first, our members felt little hard to understand "Design" because we thought it was the field the only specially educated people could do. But soon, we agreed to that "Design" meant visualizing our ideas and thoughts. And we really expected to experience "Design" through this Sogang

International Summer College.

These are our ideas about Seoul :)

Seoul Plaza is very peaceful place where people can enjoy nice cultural events. Paradoxically, Seoul Plaza and near City Hall change very fast and also accept the change without difficulties. From that point of view, we can focus dual side of Seoul. It is a kind of dual sides of Seoul that Seoul Plaza the place for everyone become a restricted area because of political issues. Also very modern, luxurious places in Gangnam and demolition area in Yong San can be another example. Some people feel relaxed and comfortable from Han River, but others imagine bad news like suicide for the river. Even, Seoul citizens have two sides. They are very kind and nice but at the same time they have egoism. Therefore, the image of Seoul in 2020 will be various with the way this situation proceeds.

두 번째 그룹미팅을 시작으로 오늘의 일정을 시작했다. 먼저 앞으로의 과제수행을 원활하게 하기위해서 각자 역할(사진촬영, 기록, 웹사이트 관리, 영상 …)을 맡았다. 그리고 주제에 대해서 명확하게 갈피를 잡지 못하고 있었기 때문에, 우선 자신의 관심사 혹은 서울하면 떠오르는 것들을 위주로 아이템을 제시해보았다. 한국에서만 볼 수 있는 거리음식들, 서울의 대중교통, 한강의 다리, 대학캠퍼스, 지하상가, 간판, 도심재개발, 서울의 특색 있는 골목들, 벤치 등 다양한 아이템이 나왔지만 주제와는 직접적으로 연결시킬 수 없었다.

앉아서 이야기해보는 것으로는 진척이 없을 것 같아 밖으로 나갔다. 2시 반이 조금 넘어서 서울시청 앞 광장에 도착했다. 시청 앞 광장 잔디밭에 앉아서 ‘2020년의 서울의 모습을 디자인하라!’는 물음에 대해 이야기를 나눴다. 미래의 서울을 위한 디자인. 질문에서의 ‘디자인’은 단순히 미술교육을 받은 사람만이 할 수 있는 전문 분야가 아닌, 미래의 서울을 좀 더 나은 방향으로 개선시키기 위해 주위에서 관찰할 수 있는 모든 것들을 차용하는 것, 즉 아이디어를 형태나 형상을 통해 가시화하는 것이며, 다들 이번 하계대학을 통해 몸소 체험할 수 있을 것으로 기대했다.
서울광장은 드넓은 잔디밭에서 주기적으로 열리는 문화행사를 즐길 수 있는 한가로운 곳이다. 그러나 역설적이게도 서울광장(서울시청 주변)은 대한민국에서 가장 빠른 속도로 변화하고 변화를 받아들이는 곳이다. 느림과 빠름이 공존하는 시청 앞 광장을 보면서 서울은 곳곳에 양면성이라는 공식이 적용되고 있다고 느꼈다. 느림과 빠름이라는 단순한 속도의 문제를 떠나서 모두를 위한 광장이 정치적 목적 때문에 경찰버스로 폐쇄되어 국민의 목소리는 들을 수 없는 공간으로 전락하는 것도 양면성의 일종이라고 볼 수 있다.

양면성은 서울의 구석구석에서 관찰 할 수 있다. 강남 테헤란로의 번지르르한 마천루와 용산의 철거촌은 개발과 보존이라는 두 갈래의 길에 서있는 서울의 현주소를 단적으로 보여준다. 심지어 서울을 가로지르는 한강은 우리에게 여유와 푸근함을 느끼게 해주기도 하지만, 누군가는 그곳에서 삶을 끝자락을 놓아버리기도 하는 차가운 철의 느낌을 지닌 곳이다. 혹은 유유히 흐르는 강물은 정적인 이미지를 대변하지만, 봉준호 감독의 영화「괴물」속의 한강의 이미지는 상당히 동적이다. 서울시민은 어떤가. 그들의 인성과 품성에는 따뜻한 정과 차가운 이기주의라는 양극단이 공존한다. 결국 2020년의 서울은 양면성을 지닌 현 상황이 어떤 방향으로 진행되는가에 따라 그 모습이 결정될 것이다.
